Blazers Drop Close Match to Middle Tennessee

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s team was leading in singles on courts one, four and five, but it was not enough as it fell to Middle Tennessee, 4-0, at George Ward on Sunday.
“MTSU is a good team,” head coach Mark Tija said. “We were close to making it a match. The doubles point turned out to be pivotal because of where we were in the other matches when play stopped. We will learn from the match and get better from it.”
The Blazers (2-4) were ahead on court one and five, and was up a break on court four, but a quick start by the Raiders allowed them to seal the victory in UAB’s league opener.
The doubles point was tightly contested, as the trio of matches was decided at 6-4. On court two, the Blazers pulled out a win in thanks to freshmen duo Sophie Dodds and Reghan Lynch. UAB fell on courts one and three as the Raiders claimed a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Middle Tennesse (6-4) extended its lead to 2-0 in thanks to a win on court three as McKenna Root fell to Zirilli.
Despite hard fought play on courts six and two, the Blazers fell, 6-0, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-2, respectively as MTSU blanked UAB.
UAB returns to the court as it faces its foe right up the road, Samford, Wednesday.
