BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Fourteen athletes on the UAB softball team were awarded The National Fastpitch Coaches Association(NFCA)Division I Scholar Award for the 2015-2016 season.
The NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete Award is awarded to athletes who achieve and maintain a 3.5 or better GPA. UAB softball was among the top 10 teams to be presented with the award.
“I am proud of our ladies’ commitment to excellence, both on and off the field. They have set their standards high and consistently prove how dedicated they are to their academic performance”, said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. “Josh Young, our academic advisor, does an outstanding job of helping our student-athletes with all of the resources they need to be successful.”
The athletes who received the award were Caitlin Attfield, Lauren Beshel, Kelly Britt, Rachel Dunsford, Cara Goodwin, Madison Hir, Hannah Lee, Tori Perkins, Analyse Petree, Katelyn Prater, Sophie Robic, Lizzie Ryan, Katlyn Sides and Megan Smith.
Recent graduate Caitlin Attfield became the first UAB softball player to be selected in the National Pro Fastpitch Draft by the Dallas Charge. This made her the second UAB female student-athlete in school history to be chosen in a professional draft. (Women’s Basketball Deanna Jackson,2002)
UAB softball finished second in Conference USA and 2016 Championship Tournament with the best combined finish in program history.
