Women's Tennis Completes First Day At Midland Intercollegiate

MIDLAND, Texas ---- The UAB women’s tennis opened its fall season Friday here at the challenging Midland Intercollegiate.
The Blazers have four players competing in the two-day event: Alex Corder, Pardis Kianoush, Amy Lowther and McKenna Root.
Root, a freshman from Midland, Mich., won her opening round match in both singles and doubles Friday. She defeated Emily Rivers of Penn State, 6-1, 6-0, in flight two before falling in the next round to North Texas’ Kamilla Galieva, 6-2, 6-2.
Root also teamed with Lowther in doubles to down Laura Arciniegas and Maria Cordona of North Texas, 7-5. The Blazer duo dropped a 6-3 decision to Kansas’ Summer Collins and Maria Cordona in the next round.
Other UAB results Friday in the women’s open main draw included Corder falling by a 6-3, 6-2 score to North Texas’ Alexis Thoma. Kianoush lost a tight 6-3 7-5 match to Rice’s Emily Smith.
Also in doubles play, Corder and Kianoush fell 6-3 to the Abilene Christian tandem of Kavsie Hermsdorf and Erin Walker.
