BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB women's tennis player Rachel Daniell is one of 14 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, the Conference USA office announced on Friday.
This is the seventh year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually awards the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarships to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
A native of Douglasville, Ga., Daniell was a four-year letterwinner for the Blazer women's tennis team, serving as team captain her senior year. Her junior season she was recognized with a C-USA Spirit of Service Award for her achievements in community service and outreach.
Daniell graduated with honors in the spring, receiving her Bachelor of Science in biology with chemistry and Spanish minors. She earned University and Department honors with a 3.93 GPA. She has been accepted to the UAB Medical School and will begin her studies this fall.
