BRADENTON, Fla. -- After winning the first regional title in school history, the UAB men's golf team looks to carry its success into the 2015 NCAA Championship that begins Friday and runs through Wednesday, June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The Blazers earned the No. 14 seed of 30 teams that will play on the par-72, 7,483-yard course.
UAB is making its sixth appearance in the NCAA Championships and first back-to-back trip since 2001, 2002. The Blazers earned their second-best finish in school history at the 2014 championships after placing 21st overall. The highest finish came in the 2001 season, when the team tied for 12th.
Two of UAB's five players in the lineup will be returning from last season's team. Senior Paul Dunne will compete in nationals for the third time. Dunne will become the first player in school history to have played in three NCAA Championships. Last season he tied for 19th individually, the third-highest finish for a Blazer.
Also returning is junior Martin Rohwer, who finished 113th last season. Rohwer is coming off a great outing in the regionals, finished second after posting a course-record 64 (-8) in the final round to help propel UAB to the win. Dunne and Rohwer will be joined by junior Will Cannon and freshmen Lee Hodges and Taylor Eyster, who will each be making their first appearance.
UAB is riding momentum into the championship as the team has won three of its last four tournaments and finished second in the other. The Blazers topped the 14-team field at the NCAA Bremerton Regional with an 843 (-21) to advance to the NCAA Championship.
This year's tournament will have a slightly different format. The teams will begin with three rounds of stroke play Friday-Sunday. The 15 teams with the top 54-hole total will play one more round of stroke play on Monday, which will also determine the individual champion. Then the top eight teams from stroke-play will move on to match play, with the quarterfinals and semifinals on Tuesday followed by the final on Wednesday.
UAB is paired with South Florida and Charlotte for the first two rounds of play. The Blazers have been slated to tee off from the 10th tee at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT on Friday. Saturday, the teamswill begin play in the morning, starting at 8:40 a.m. ET/7:40 a.m. CT from the first tee.
The Golf Channel will have coverage beginning with the final round of stroke play and all three match play rounds. Monday it will air the final round of stroke play from 4-7 p.m. ET. Tuesday's coverage will begin with the match play quarterfinals from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ET, then the semifinals from 3:30-7 p.m. ET. The finals will be broadcast from 3-7 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
