BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's golf team is making a school record fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regionals after being selected as the No. 5 seed to play in Bremerton, Wash. The Blazers will play 54 holes beginning Thursday and concluding Saturday at the par-72, 7115-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club.
UAB is among the 14-team field that will be competing at the regional. The top five teams from each of six regional sites will advance to the NCAA National Championship at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., May 29-June 3.
The Bremerton Regional will feature five teams that played in the 2014 NCAA Championships, including the Blazers. South Carolina was awarded the No. 1 seed, regional host Washington is the No. 2 seed, Southern California is the No. 3 seed and Baylor was selected as the No. 4 seed.
UAB made its fifth appearance in the national championship last season, earning its second-best finish in 21st. The Blazers are looking to make their first back-to-back appearance in the championship since they did so in 2000-01 and 2001-02.
The Blazers have been playing their best golf recently, after recording two-straight team titles and finishing runner-up at the 2015 Conference USA Championship. UAB topped the 24-team field for The Goodwin title before winning the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship just a week later.
All five members of the lineup for the Green and Gold picked up C-USA honors. Senior Paul Dunne, junior Martin Rohwer and freshman Lee Hodges were each selected to the All-C-USA First Team.
Hodges was also named C-USA Freshman of the Year and made the All-Freshman Team. Junior Will Cannon was selected to the All-C-USA Second Team and freshman Taylor Eyster earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
This year's lineup will feature two members from last season's team that advanced to the NCAA Nationals. Dunne earned All-America honors in 2014 after finishing 22nd at nationals and leading the team with a career-best third place finish at regionals. The Greystones, Ireland native is making his fourth NCAA regional appearance, having competed each year of his career.
Rohwer appeared in his first regional last year and finished tied for sixth individually. The Natal, South Africa native is tied for a team-best seven top 20 finishes, including three top-10 finishes this season. Rohwer earned C-USA Golfer of the Week honors after tying for eighth at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
Cannon, Eyster and Hodges are each making their first appearances at the NCAA Regionals. Hodges had a stellar freshman season, leading UAB with a 72.2 stroke average and five top-10 finishes, including four top-five. He is coming off a third place finish at the C-USA Championship.
Cannon had a career weekend at The Goodwin where he tied for first after carding a UAB record 197. He has three top-20 finishes so far this year.
