CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Kelly Britt delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the UAB softball team to a walk-off win over the Wisconsin Badgers, 3-2, Sunday at Chapman Field.
The Blazers’ (5-4) first three batters - Ashley Johnson, Mary Warren and Rachel Dunsford - each reached to set the table for Britt. With no outs, Britt slugged a pop fly deep enough into right field for Johnson to tag from third and score the winning run.
Sophomore right-hander Madison Hir (1-0) earned the win for the Blazers after pitching scoreless ball over the final three innings, limiting the Badgers to one hit and two walks. Taylor-Paige Stewart (2-3) was charged with the loss for the Badgers.
Sophomore righty Cara Goodwin went four innings in her third start of the year, allowing the Badgers two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
The Blazers were led at the plate by Caitlin Attfield, who went 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored, and Sara Beth Williamson, who had a single and a pair of RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Wisconsin put both of their runs on the board in the fourth inning. Chloe Miller reached on a walk, and Brianna Flugaur pinch ran for her and stole second. Ashley Van Zeeland drove the first run in on a double, then stole third and reached home on a throwing error.
Williamson’s two-RBI sacrifice fly came in the sixth inning. Danii Fernandez led off the inning with a single into left, and Attfield reached on a fielder’s choice, as the Badgers failed to throw Fernandez out at second. After a sacrifice bunt moved both up a bag, Williamson sent a fly ball to the warning track in right. Each tagged and scored to tie the game up at two apiece and set up Britt’s heroics.
