CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UAB women’s soccer team (2-2) dropped a 2-1 decision to Jacksonville in its first match of the College of Charleston Cup at Patriots Point on Friday afternoon.
“It was disappointing to give up two goals in less than five minutes,” head coach Harold Warren said. “They were preventable, but we’ve got to give it to Jacksonville. They’re a good team and they capitalized and we dug ourselves a deep hole very, very early in the game. We did fight back, even with the two-goal deficit. We still created enough opportunities to win the game, but if you don’t take initiative and are a bit careless early in the game, it can cost you, and it sure did to us.”
Jacksonville scored within the first two minutes of play and backed that up with a second goal at the 4:25 mark to take an early 2-0 advantage.
UAB prevented the shutout, though, as Johanna Liney found the net in the final minute of play on a Paige Hanks assist to cut the deficit and final score to 2-1.
The Dolphins scored on goals from Julia Burton and Marie Weckhurst at the 1:20 mark and again three minutes later.
UAB led the match in shots with a 15-11 advantage. Liney took a team-high four shots, while freshman Amy Brewer had three for one on target. Kasey Johnson and Paige Hanks both took two.

“Illinois is a very good team,” Warren said. “There’s no doubt about it. They went far in the tournament last year and have a very good coaching staff, but we plan on coming out better than we were tonight. We weren’t bad tonight, but we need to be much better to play against Illinois. We have to try and get a win. The girls have sorted things out and they’ll be ready.”
