CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UAB women’s soccer team (2-3) got an early goal from senior Megan Collins to even things up through 12 minutes, but the Blazers surrendered two more goals late in the match to drop a 3-1 contest to Illinois Sunday afternoon at the College of Charleston Cup.
“We gave up a goal early and we fought back to get one against a very, very good Illinois team,” head coach Harold Warren said. “We held on pretty strong and gave away another goal and they obviously got the third one. We’re still going through some growing pains, but we addressed it and we’ll fix it. We have time before conference to get things sorted out especially with the young side. It’s good experience, you just have to learn from them.”
UAB fell behind early at the 7:09 mark when Jannelle Flaws found the net to put the Fighting Illini up, 1-0, but the Blazers fought back five minutes later to even the match. Megan Collins scored her first career goal at the 12:00 mark when Johanna Liney provided the assist to tie the match up at 1-1.
Illinois retook the lead in the 74th minute on a header and added a third goal two minutes later to seal the 3-1 victory.
UAB got just two shots off to Illinois’ 14. Goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez recorded four saves. Collins and Liney each had UAB’s shots, while 17 different Blazers saw the field in Sunday’s matchup.
UAB will continue its stretch of seven-straight road games to begin the season next Friday with a non-conference match at Alabama.
“It’s good we get to sleep in our own beds for a weekend,” Warren said. “We’re just focused on Alabama now because that’s our first game and it’s always a tough game and a rival game. It’s good we get to be at home, train at home, drive over and play and go home again. That’s definitely a bonus.”
