UAB Presses Through Practice For C-USA Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team continued its preparations for Saturday's Conference USA opener against FIU on Wednesday with practice in milder temperatures for the Blazers at the UAB Practice Fields.
Head coach Bill Clark said that the first three weeks have been tests and have been successful, but Saturday's game is the main point of emphasis with the start of the 2014 league slate.
"I think we're excited just for this first conference game," Clark said following Wednesday's practice. "FIU is saying, we're saying, we're all 0-0. We've got some things in front of us, we've got goals we've set, but we really need to just focus on this one game. It's a one game season to us, then we'll go from there."
FIU's offense is near the bottom of the league statistics, while the Panthers' defense is one of the best. Clark noted that although those are contrasting statistical numbers, FIU is a threat and has proved it in the last few games.
"You've got two separate units," Clark said. "The offense is over there working, the defense is working and obviously this is a team that started out 16-0 against Pittsburgh. They kind of lost a fluke game to Bethune (Cookman), but they've played two really good opponents. Defensively they're great, so anytime you're good defensively I think you're always going to be in the game."
UAB will return to the practice fields one final time for the week on Thursday. Saturday's matchup will air on the American Sports Network and fans can watch the game locally on CW21 WTTO in Birmingham.
