BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB's women's tennis team treks to Midland, Texas this weekend to open up the 2014 fall season at the Midland Intercollegiate Tournament. Play begins Friday and will run through Sunday.
Four of UAB's eight players will participate in this weekend's event, which will be held at the The Racquet Club in Midland. Blazers Rachel Daniell, Amy Lowther, Catherine Ragon and Elaine Simon all join second-year head coach Mark Tjia for the three-day tournament.
"We are starting the season earlier than we have in the fall," Tjia said. "I wanted to do that on purpose so we could jump right in and get to know where we are and what we need. We will have more time to improve in the fall the earlier we get started. Also, we are going to Midland and will get to face some opponents that we don't normally get to face."
UAB joins a list of prestigious teams in Midland. The Blazers have an opportunity to face opponents from schools such as Pepperdine, TCU, Penn State, Nebraska, Tulsa, Rice, SMU, Baylor, Kansas, North Texas and Texas State.
Daniell, who played the No. 1 singles position for UAB last season, will play Saana Saarteinen from Tulsa in Flight 1 of the singles draw, joining Lowther and Simon in the top flight. Ragon will play in the second singles flight.
