BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB softball head coach Marla Townsend unveiled the 2015 schedule on Tuesday, which is highlighted by 11 games against teams that appeared in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
“I feel that we have put together a very competitive schedule that will test Team 16 from the beginning,” said Townsend. “We take pride in representing the UAB athletic department, this university and Conference USA.”
The Blazers’ slate features four regular season tournaments and 17 home games at the UAB Softball Field. UAB will host four C-USA foes in Birmingham, while traveling to UTSA, FIU, Charlotte and Marshall.
“When you look at our roster you will see a very young team,” Townsend said. “When I look at this young team I think about the opportunities that we have to grow and develop with the outstanding work ethic these ladies bring to the field and weight room everyday. They are already a close family that takes great pride in wearing green and gold.”
The Blazers’ season begins in Alabama at the Plainsman Invite hosted by Auburn from Feb. 6-8. UAB opens the tournament against Appalachian State and Auburn on Feb. 6. A day later, the Blazers match up against Chattanooga and George Washington, and close the tournament on Feb. 8 versus Evansville.
The following weekend, UAB makes its first long road trip to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tournament. The Blazers start the tournament against its host, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, on Feb. 13 and close against the Islanders on Feb. 15. On Feb. 14, UAB meets South Dakota and Wisconsin.
On Feb. 17, the Green and Gold hosts Women’s College World Series finalist, Alabama, for the first of two games on the 2015 slate. The second game will be played on March 10 in Tuscaloosa.
The Blazers make their first trip to the state of Florida from Feb. 20-22 at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. UAB will play Villanova and Texas State on the first day of play, Wichita State and Harvard on day two, and close play against Robert Morris on Feb. 22.
Before traveling to Arkansas for the Woo Pig Classic from Feb. 27 to March 1, the Blazers will host fellow 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier Mississippi State on Feb. 24. UAB opens the Woo Pig Classic against Valparaiso and Arkansas, and concludes with Western Illinois and a team to be determined on March 1.
The Blazers face off with the Atlantic Sun’s regular season runner-up Lipscomb for a doubleheader at the UAB Softball Field on March 3 before beginning C-USA play against North Texas in Birmingham on March 7.
The C-USA Championship runs from May 7-9 in Miami, Fla., on the campus of FIU.
“Our seniors are outstanding leaders on and off of the field,” said Townsend. “They understand what it takes to win and are holding every teammate to the highest standard.”
UAB made its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament last season after posting a record of 32-27, including a 15-8 mark in conference play.
