BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB bowling team released its schedule for the 2014-15 season, head coach Michelle Crews announced on Monday. The Blazers will compete in eight tournaments during the regular season, with three in the fall and five in the spring season.
UAB is coming off its third season as a program, notching the most wins with 41 in 2013-14. The Blazers finished 41-55 overall last year and return seven of their eight players from a season ago.
The team will open the season with the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational in New Orleans, La. from Friday, Oct. 17 through Sunday, Oct. 19. UAB will then travel just down the road to Montgomery Ala. for the Hornet Classic that is set for Oct. 14-16.
To close out the fall season, the Blazers will participate in the Kat Klash tournament in Houston, Texas from Nov. 21-13.
UAB will pick back up in January with the Mid Winter Invitational (Jan. 16-18) and continue its spring slate with the Kutztown Invitational (Jan. 23-25), Wildcat Invitational (Feb. 6-8), SFA Stormin’ Jack Classic (Feb. 13-15) and Music City Classic (March 6-8).
Postseason tournaments will begin with the USBC Sectionals March 13-15, followed by the NCAA Championships that will be held in St. Louis, Mo. from April 9-11. The team will also have the opportunity to qualify for the USBC Nationals in Wichita, Kan. from April 13-18.
This year will mark the senior season for the inaugural recruiting class. Marissa Ferreira, Qituwrah King, Ali Long, Jennafer Mellott and Leah Walker have all been with the bowling program since its inception. The Blazers will also have returners Lauren Douglas and Bailey James who saw action as freshmen.
The Blazers also added four newcomers for the 2014-15 season, with three freshmen and one transfer. Sophomore Madeleine McDuff joins the team as a transfer from last season’s national champion Sam Houston State.
Crews added a highly touted group of freshmen as well. Jessica Mellott, the sister of Jennafer, was one of just five high school females to be selected to the Dexter United States Bowling Congress All-American Team.
Amy Quick, who trained under Crews’ coach at UCF, is a two-time Bright House Networks Female Bowler of the Year out of Florida. Shana Taulbee will also add depth as a two-time winner of the Florida Junior Bowler’s Tour.
