UAB Women's Tennis Falls In C-USA Championship

HOUSTON — The No. 8 seed UAB women's tennis team fought hard at the top two positions but dropped a 4-1 match to No. 9 seed Old Dominion on Thursday in the opening round of the 2013 Conference USA Championship.
With the loss, UAB holds a 12-8 overall record under first-year head coach Lisa Jackson. This year's win total represents the most victories in a season for a Blazer team since 2007.
Old Dominion improves to 13-8 overall and will face No. 1 overall seed Rice on Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
With the two teams playing singles first due to rain in the Houston area, the Lady Monarchs began Thursday's contest with a 6-3, 6-3 win from Nika Khomolovska over UAB's Elaine Simon at the sixth position.
The Blazers quickly answered that ODU triumph with Rachel Daniell's 6-2, 6-3 victory against Nikol Hristova at the second court to tie the match at 1-1.
From there, Old Dominion reeled off three-straight wins to take the 4-1 victory. Melissa Esnal Olguin started the Lady Monarch rally with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against UAB's Menanteau Moolman at the fifth spot, before Juliana Pires defeated Blazer Amy Lowther, 7-5, 6-4, at court No. 4.
Ivana Vukovic then finished the ODU scoring with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win against UAB's Caroline Faught, before the match at the top spot between Blazer Isabel Fernandez and ODU's Diana Ivanova was concluded with Ivanova up 3-6, 6-3, 5-3.
The two teams did not play doubles after Old Dominion clinched the contest in singles.
