UAB Notes
Frazier Finds Groove In Charleston
» Blazer junior point guard Chad Frazier, who is in his first season at UAB, has had an impressive Charleston Classic through the first two games. Frazier has scored 30-plus points in two-straight games -- the first Blazer to do so since 2008, when Robert Vaden scored 41 vs. UTEP and 30 vs. Tulane in back-to-back games.
Blazers’ Hot Second-Half Shooting
» UAB made 19-of-23 (82.6%) from the field as a team in the second half against Nebraska on Thursday, outscoring the Cornhuskers, 56-40, in the final 20 minutes. Rod Rucker and Jordan Swing each scored nine points in the second half, while Fahro Alihodzic added eight second-half points and Chad Frazier scored 21 in the second period.
UAB Gets 700 In 36 Years
» With UAB’s 87-74 win against Nebraska on Friday, the Blazers picked up their 700th win in program history -- a remarkable stat considering UAB is in just its 36th season of playing collegiate men’s basketball. Overall, the Blazers are averaging 20 wins per season dating back to the inaugural 1978-79 season.
» It is also ironic that the 700th win came against Nebraska -- the same team that UAB played in its first-ever game as a program in 1978.
Blazers Own The Boards
» UAB recorded 54 rebounds against Rutgers, 53 vs. Troy and 62 vs. New Mexico in three-straight games. Thursday’s performance represents the fifth time in school history that UAB has had 60-plus rebounds. The school record is 69, which came against South Alabama on Dec. 20, 1994.
» The Blazers have doubled up two opponents this season the boards. UAB doubled Rutgers’ rebound total of 27 as the Blazers had just as many offensive boards (22) as the Scarlet Knights had defensively. Against Troy, UAB outrebounded the Trojans, 53-24, including a 39-16 advantage on the defensive glass.
UAB Sets Free Throw Record
» In its game against Troy on Nov. 14, UAB set a Blazer single-game free throw percentage (min. 10 attempts) record by going 16-of-17 (94.1 percent) from the free-throw line. UAB has gone over 90 percent on a minimum of 10 attempts now seven times in school history. UAB broke the previous single-game record of 93.8 percent vs. USF on Dec. 27, 2006.
Rucker Rebounds
» UAB senior forward Rod Rucker’s 20 rebounds against New Mexico on Thursday represented the third highest single-game total in Blazer basketball history. Former Blazer Cameron Moore recorded 24 against George Washington Dec. 28, 2011 to hold the highest mark in Blazer history.
» Rucker added 18 points to his 20 boards vs. New Mexico and 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Nebraska.
C.J. Washington Named C-USA Co-Player of the Week
» UAB junior forward C.J. Washington was named the Conference USA Co-Player of the Week this past week. Washington scored two-straight double-doubles (18 pts., 10 rebs. vs. Rutgers; 25 pts., 10 rebs vs. Troy) last week to help the Blazers to a 3-0 start.
Scouting Temple
» Temple enters Sunday’s game with a 2-3 record after defeating Georgia, 83-81, in the second round of the Charleston Classic on Friday. The Owls lost to Clemson in the first round, 72-58, in Thursday’s opening round.
» Will Cummings leads the Owls in scoring with 18.4 points per game. In all, Temple has four players scoring in double figures. Temple is averaging just 10 turnovers per game, but is being outrebounded by an average of 39.2 to 38.4 per game so far in the 2013-14 season.
