BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB's women's tennis team stays in Birmingham this week as the Blazers make the short trek to Samford University for the 2013 Samford Fall Invitational. UAB's first serve of the event is slated for 10 a.m. CT Friday.
This year's invite features four teams -- UAB, Samford, Middle Tennessee and South Alabama -- who will play in flighted round-robin singles and doubles brackets. Each player will compete in three singles matches and three doubles matches throughout the tournament, including one singles and one doubles contest each day.
UAB begins the tournament with the 10 a.m. CT doubles flight on Friday, facing players from Middle Tennessee. The Blazers then play a singles round against South Alabama shortly after doubles action has concluded.
Under the direction of second-year head coach Lisa Jackson, the Blazers come into their second tournament of the fall season looking to build on a strong start.
In last week's Steve Baras Fall Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., UAB rolled through doubles competition, placing three teams in the championship bracket of their respective draws.
Freshman Catherine Ragon was also impressive for the Blazers, and led UAB in singles action with a 3-0 record and a win in the championship match of the No. 5 singles draw.
Following action this week, UAB travels to Auburn, Ala., for the ITA Southern Regional on Oct. 17-21.
