BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team will host Conference USA foe FIU on Wednesday night. UAB and FIU are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field.
Wednesday night's matchup pits two of the best offenses in the country. In the most recent NCAA statisical rankings UAB has the highest scoring offense in the nation (2.64 goals per game), while FIU sports the 16th ranked offense (2.09 goals per game).
In addition, head coach Mike Getman is seeking his 90th Conference USA victory of his coaching career on Wednesday night. Getman is the winningest coach in Conference USA history.
Men's Soccer Leading The Country In Scoring
The UAB men's soccer team has the highest scoring offense in the nation, according to the most recent NCAA statistical rankings. UAB is scoring at a clip of 2.64 goals per game.
This marks the second time in 2013 that the Blazers have owned the top scoring offense in the country. UAB owned a 3.67 goals per game average through its first three matches, which was the top mark in Division I men's soccer as of Monday, Sept. 9.
Up front, junior forward Diego Navarrete and sophomore forward Freddy Ruiz form one of the best one-two punches in the nation. Ruiz ranks seventh in the country in goals per game (0.82) and total goals (9). Navarrete is 13th in the nation in total assists (6) and 14th in assists per game (0.55). Both rank in the top 25 nationally in points per game and total points, as well.
Five Straight Victories
Prior to its 3-2 overtime setback to Old Dominion on Saturday, Oct. 12, UAB had won five consecutive matches. It marked its longest winning streak of the 2013 season and was the longest streak since 2011.
In that run, UAB knocked off non-conference opponents Belmont, Memphis, and Mercer and scored two Conference USA victories against Florida Atlantic and Kentucky. During that stretch, the Blazers outscored their opponents 16-4.
UAB earned numerous honors during that period, as well. Junior forward Diego Navarrete was recognized by numerous outlets for his eight-point performance against Florida Atlantic. Redshirt junior midfielder Alex Clay collected Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week accolades following his efforts against Belmont and Kentucky.
