BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After a week off from competition to continue training, the UAB women’s tennis returns to the court this weekend, Sept. 28-30, in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the 30th Annual Steve Baras Fall Classic. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will host the tournament, featuring over 120 collegiate tennis players, at the Champions Club.
“We’re really excited to get back on the court after a couple weeks of hard practice,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “We’re looking to really establish a high level of competing throughout the weekend.”
The women's draw will feature over 60 players from eight schools, including host Chattanooga, UAB, Samford, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Jacksonville State, Lipscomb and Lee.
Last time out, the Blazers claimed six matches at the Atlanta Classic, led by freshman Amy Lowther and the doubles team of junior Caroline Faught and Isabel Fernandez who both went 2-1 in the tournament. UAB will look to roll that momentum into this weekend.
“We’ve been really focusing a lot on doubles in practice,” Jackson said. “Right now, I think they’re playing at a high level and I look forward to seeing how the week of practice, along with that confidence they have from the first tournament, translates to improvements on the court. [Amy] obviously made a splash in the first tournament as just a freshman, so I want to see how she carries that over to the next tournament as well.”
The women will be broken into eight singles and four doubles draws in the three-day event. The Blazers will take seven women to compete in singles, and three duos to compete in doubles.
Action begins with No. 1 doubles on Friday, Sept. 28, at 8:30 a.m. ET, while the No. 1 singles competition begins at 11 a.m. ET on Friday.
