ATLANTA – The UAB women's tennis team concluded the final day of the Atlanta Classic at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park on Sunday, led by the doubles duo of junior Caroline Faught and senior Isabel Fernandez who picked up the lone victory on the day for the Blazers.
The Blazers won a total of six matches throughout the three-day tournament with four wins coming in singles and two victories in doubles. Faught and Fernandez were responsible for the two doubles wins, finishing the weekend with a 2-1 record after downing Rebeca Pereira and Simona Weymar of North Florida, 8-6.
“It was really good for me to see them compete,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “We went up against some really stiff competition and competed. I’m looking forward to seeing how hard they work over the next 10 days as we get ready for the tournament at UT-Chattanooga.”
Freshman Amy Lowther also won two matches on the weekend, in singles, before falling 6-2, 7-5 in her flight championship to Georgia State’s Linn Timmermann. Sophomore Rachel Daniell battled in a tough three-setter against Masa Grgan of Georgia State before falling 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Faught and Fernandez didn’t fare as well in singles competition on the final day, as Faught fell 6-0, 6-1 to Georgia State’s Natallia Vavulina and Fernandez dropped a 6-2, 7-6 match to Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah. Also competing in singles for the Blazers was senior Menanteau Moolman and freshman Elaine Simon. Moolman fell in her flight to Georgia State’s Maryna Kozachenko 6-2, 6-2, while Simon fell 6-4, 6-1 to Georgia State’s Chaimaa Roudami.
In doubles, Daniell and Lowther fell by a score of 8-4 to North Florida’s Lorena Aviles and Taylor Hollander. Moolman and Simon lost 8-2 to UNF’s Melanie Aguirre and Marina Cunningham.
Up next, UAB heads to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Steve Baras Fall Classic on Sept. 28-30.
