Women's Tennis Completes Second Day At Atlanta Classic

ATLANTA ----- The UAB women's tennis team completed the second day of action here Saturday at the Atlanta Classic as freshman Amy Lowtherkept her unbeaten singles record intact after posting another victory.
Lowther, from Seminole, Fla., downed North Florida's Rebeca Pereira in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, to run her singles mark to 2-0 at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park. Lowther will attempt to claim her flight championship on Sunday.
"I'm happy with the way she (Amy) is competing as a freshman," UAB head coach Lisa Jacksonsaid. "It's great for her to have this opportunity and I'm really happy with her performance."
Overall, the results weren't quite as positive Saturday for the Blazers. "I thought we competed a little bit better today," Jackson said, "but we still have a lot of work to do."
Senior Isabel Fernandez lost a tight three-setter to North Florida's Lorena Aviles, 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 in her flight while the Ospreys' Simona Weymar was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over sophomore Rachel Daniell.
In other UAB singles play Saturday, the Blazers' Caroline Faught fell in her match, 6-2, 6-2, to UNF's Taylor Hollander with Hollander's teammate, Marina Cunningham, taking a 6-1, 6-1 win over UAB's Menanteau Moolman. Elaine Simonof UAB dropped a 6-1, 7-6 match to North Florida's Melanie Aguirre.
Mariella Calderon provided UNF with another win as she downed UAB's Rachel Cohenby a 6-4, 6-2 score.
In doubles play, UAB's tandem of Faught and Fernandez claimed a 9-7 win over the Emory duo of Madison Gordon and Beatrice Rosen. Marissa Levine and Jordan Wylie outlasted the Blazers' team of Mooman and Simon, 8-6, with Daniell and Lowther falling in their doubles flight, 8-3, to Emory's Gabrielle Clark and Emma Taylor.
