ATLANTA, Ga. -- The UAB women’s tennis team wrapped up day one of its fall season Friday at the Atlanta Classic, hosted by Georgia State, at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park where the Blazers collected three singles victories.
“I’m happy overall with the effort but results-wise, there’s a lot we have to improve upon,” head coach Lisa Jackson. “It’s just the first day of the fall but I’m looking forward to seeing how they improve from one day to the next.”
UAB faced members of the Georgia State squad in three doubles contests, but dropped all three matches. Sophomore Rachel Daniell and freshman Amy Lowther fell in their opening flight, 8-1, to Maryna Kozachenko and Natallia Vavulina, followed by junior Caroline Faught and senior Isabel Fernandez dropping their match, 8-2, against Whitney Byrd and Masa Grgan. Senior Menanteau Moolman and freshman Elaine Simon rounded out the Blazers’ contingent, and were tripped up by the Panthers’ Chaimaa Roudami and Linn Timmermann by a score of 8-3.
In singles, the Blazers were matched with an Emory squad that claimed five of eight contests. Faught and Lowther both claimed decisive victories over their respective opponents in singles, taking the matches by scores of 6-0, 7-5 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively. Daniell found herself down after dropping the first set 5-7, but battled back to beat Jordan Wylie 6-4, 6-2 in the final two sets. Fernandez and senior Rachel Cohen each won their first set, but went on to fall in the next two sets to drop their matches, respectively. Moolman (6-0, 6-1), Simon (7-5, 6-3) and Witkowski (6-0, 6-2) all fell two sets to none in their matches.
The doubles will commence action on the court Saturday when they face-off against Emory at 2 p.m. ET. Singles competitors are slated to take the court at 3 p.m. ET, with all but one contest coming against North Florida.
