KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - UAB freshman golfer Martin Rohwer finished in 13th place overall to lead the men's golf team at the Bank Invitational at the Ocean Course, which completed play on Tuesday. As a team, the Blazers closed the competition in sixth overall with a team score of 922 (302-303-317) during the three-day, 54-hole event.
Rohwer led the Blazers throughout the week on his way to carding a 12-over par 228 (73-76-79) in his first collegiate tournament. He was UAB's low golfer in each of the three rounds, which included a tournament-low round of one-over par 73 on Sunday.
Junior Sam Love, who won the event's individual title last year, finished tied for 21st overall with a 231 (77-75-79) on the par 72, 7,344-yard golf course, which also served the site of this year's PGA Championship.
True freshman Will Cannon also had a solid showing in his first collegiate event, as he closed play tied for 48th with a 238 (78-75-85). Junior Conner Pratt tied for 59th overall with a 240 (79-81-80), while Thomas Sutton shot a 244 (86-77-81) and tied for 70th.
Sophomore Paul Dunne, whose second round was disqualified due to a rules infraction, was not allowed to compete in the individual competition. However, he did count toward the team score in both the first and third rounds, carding a 74 during Sunday's first round and a 79 on Tuesday.
Florida (882), which entered as the 24th-ranked team in the nation, ran away with the team title, topping second place UT Arlington (906) by 24 strokes. The Gators boasted four players who finished among the top five individuals in the field. Houston (912) was third, followed by tournament host College of Charleston (913). South Florida (917) rounded out the top five, just ahead of the Blazers.
Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes claimed the medalist honor with a four-over par 220 to finish a stroke ahead of Florida's Tyler McCumber and T.J. Vogel.
The Blazers will next be in action when it hosts the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Hosted by Graeme McDowell on Sept. 24-25 at Shoal Creek Country Club. It will mark the first time since 2008 that UAB will hold the event in Birmingham, and the fifth time overall. Admission is free to the general public, with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
