BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's golf team dropped to sixth place through the second round of play at the 2012 Bake Invitational at the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Blazers, who entered the day in fourth, have rounds of 302 and 303 (605) and will enter Tuesday's final 18 holes just eight strokes out of second place.
"I'm disappointed with the way we ended the day," UAB head coach Alan Kaufmansaid. "It was a tough day all the way around. We played well for most of the round, but we made some crucial mistakes down the stretch and that will cost you every time. If we can play consistent golf (Tuesday), then hopefully we will be able to creep closer to second or third place."
One of those mistakes caused sophomore Paul Dunneto be disqualified from Monday's second round. Dunne was penalized for a rule infraction on the first hole, which caused if score to be thrown out from the team total on the day. Dunne, who carded a two-over par 74 on Sunday, will not be eligible for the individual award, but will be able to contribute on Tuesday toward the Blazers overall team tally.
UAB freshman Martin Rohwercontinues to play well in his first-ever collegiate event. The Natal, South Africa native is in a tie for 12th overall through 36 holes, carding a five-over par 149 (73-76) through the opening two days.
Another freshman, Will Cannon, along with junior Sam Lovetied for the team's low round of the day, both carding a three-over par 75. Love, the defending medalist winner in the event, is in a tie for 22nd overall with an eight-over par 152 (77-75). Meanwhile, Cannon, who is playing in his first collegiate event, is in a tie for 28th with a nine-over 153 (78-75).
"I am very proud of the way both Martin and Will are playing," Kaufman said. "For them to be playing this well in their first tournament really speaks to the poise and maturity they have on the golf course."
Junior Conner Pratt is in a tie for 59th at 160 (79-81), while junior Thomas Suttonrounds out the Blazers in a tie for 75th with a 163 (86-77).
Florida (577), ranked No. 24 in the nation, is running away with the event, as it holds a 20-stroke lead over second-place Houston (597). Tournament host College of Charleston (600) is in third overall, while UT Arlington (602) and South Florida (604) round out the top five in the 15-team tournament.
