BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB junior Thomas Sutton lost in dramatic fashion to Casey O'Toole in the 12th State Match Play Championship at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear, Ala.
After battling back-and-forth throughout, the duo finished Saturday afternoon's 18 holes all square and headed to extra holes.
Sutton looked to be in line for a title when he hit his second shot on the par 5 first hole to within 15 feet. However, O'Toole, a senior at Samford, chipped in for eagle from 80 feet away. Sutton could not sink his eagle putt, resulting in the title for O'Toole.
Sutton reached the final when he beat UAB teammate Michael Ulmer, 2 and 1, on Saturday morning. The Montgomery, Ala. native also topped fellow Blazer Hunter Hawkins in the round of 16.
