UAB Travels To Lipscomb For Doubleheader

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The UAB and Lipscomb softball teams will square off in a make-up doubleheader on Tuesday at Lipscomb’s Draper Diamond beginning at 5 p.m. CT. The teams were originally scheduled to play the twinbill on March 15, but it was postponed due to inclement weather.
UAB At A Glance
The Blazers (30-17, 13-5 C-USA) are 17-12 in non-conference action, 7-3 in their last 10 games and are in second place in the C-USA standings. Last week, UAB split a doubleheader at Chattanooga and took two of three games at UTEP.
Mandy Lowman leads UAB’s offensive output with a .378 average and 10 doubles. Kristen McGrath is tops on the team with 35 RBI on 41 hits and 13 home runs. The designated hitter needs just one more round tripper to top the UAB career record set by Andrea Rodgers in 2007.
Amber Torres has a team-best 1.14 ERA, with 12 earned runs in 73.2 innings pitched. The senior now has a career-high 51 strikeouts with five complete games, four shutouts and two saves.
Scouting Lipscomb
The Lady Bison (30-14, 8-6 Atlantic Sun) hold a notable 22-8 non-conference record and have won seven of their last 10 games, including five of the last six.
Lipscomb’s success can be credited in part to Kelsey Cartwright who leads the team in almost every offensive category including average (.353), runs (34), hits (48), RBI (36) and home runs (13).
The pitching duo Whitney Kiihnl and Ashley Anderson have held opponents to a 237 hitting clip and have a combined 2.17 ERA. Kiihnl has tossed an impressive 24 complete games, including eight shutouts. In 193.0 innings pitched she has fanned 196 and walked 81 batters.
Series History
UAB leads the all-time series against the Lady Bison, 5-4. UAB dropped the last two games to Lipscomb, 4-1 and 7-6 (9), at the 2010 NCAA Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
