BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Elaine Simon from St. Frederick Catholic High School in Monroe, La., has committed to attend UAB and compete for the Blazer women's tennis program.
A three-time team captain at St. Frederick, Simon is competing in her senior season this spring. She has won regional and state titles in each of the past three high school seasons and was named her team's MVP in each of those years. She has also helped St. Frederick to the state finals as a team.
A varsity-level competitor since she was in seventh grade, Simon had also previously advanced to the state semifinals and finals in singles.
"We are thrilled Elaine has decided to join the Blazer family," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "She embodies the characteristics of a student-athlete and will immediately challenge for a spot in both the singles and doubles lineups."
A three-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net, Simon is ranked among the top five in the 18-under age group in the USTA rankings for the state of Louisiana. She has represented Louisiana twice in the Southern Junior Cup. Simon advanced to the finals of the 2010 Southern Open 18-under doubles draw in Birmingham and won the 2010 YMCA singles championship in Baton Rouge, La.
Simon has been active off the court, as well, and currently serves as her senior class president. She has been involved in numerous other activities, including National Honor Society, St. Frederick Ambassadors and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A Wendy's High School Heisman award winner at St. Frederick, Simon has maintained a 3.94 GPA.
Simon will enroll at UAB this fall and be eligible to compete for the Blazers for the 2012-13 season. She joins Amy Lowther, a Pinellas County, Fla., product who signed with the Blazers in November, as newcomers for next year's UAB women's tennis team.
