BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB junior outfielder Whitney Fletcher and senior pitcher Amber Torres were named the Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday. It marks the second weekly honor for Fletcher this season and the first for Torres in her UAB career.
Fletcher, a Decatur, Ala. native, batted .538 (7-for-13) and slugged .846 last week. She drove in three runs and scored eight more, accounting for 11 of UAB’s 39 total runs. Her on-base percentage was .650 and she collected 11 total bases. Fletcher was a perfect 4-4 on stolen bases and recorded six walks.
In UAB’s midweek doubleheader split at Chattanooga, Fletcher batted .571 (4-for-7), slugged 1.000 and scored four runs on four hits, including a home run.
In the three-game weekend series at UTEP, the lefty leadoff hitter batted .500 (3-for-6) with five walks, an on-base percentage of .667 and a slugging percentage of .667. She scored four runs and drove in two more.
Torres, a Huntsville, Ala. native, picked up two wins last week, tossing two complete games and her career-best fourth shutout on the season. She posted a 1.17 ERA over two starters and now has a career-best 51 strikeouts. Torres pitched all seven innings in the 6-3 win Wednesday at Chattanooga, allowing just two earned runs, while striking out seven batters.
She then pitched five scoreless innings in the 8-0 run-rule victory Saturday at UTEP, holding the nation’s home run leader Camilla Carrera to just one base-hit in three at bats.
Fletcher, Torres and the Blazers return to action in a doubleheader Tuesday at Lipscomb. Game one is slated for a 5 p.m. CT start.
