BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB sophomore men's golfer Thomas Sutton was selected to the 2012 Conference USA All-Academic team, league officials announced on Friday. He becomes the first Blazer to earn the recognition since Adam West was selected to the 2009 all-academic squad.
This year's team, which was selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors, consists of two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore. To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and be a regular participant on their team.
Sutton has competed in seven of UAB's 10 tournaments this season, recording four top-25 finishes. His 73.2 per-round stroke average ranks third on the team, while he is second on the team with a pair of top-10 results (Eighth at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate and fifth at the Saint Mary's Invitational). Earlier this year, Sutton carded a career-low round of 65 at the prestigious Jerry Pate Invitational, which tied for the sixth-lowest single-round score in program history.
Off the course, Sutton is performing just as well. An accounting major, he is a three-time selection to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. The redshirt sophomore from Montgomery, Ala. maintains a 3.36 GPA and has twice been selected as the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
Four other golfers from around the league joined Sutton on the team: James Ross (Houston), Bosten Miller (Marshall), Jack Belote (Memphis) and Chris Worrell (Tulsa).
Sutton and his Blazer teammates are set to compete at the 2012 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship, which will take place Sunday through Tuesday at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
