BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team came up on the short end of a 4-3 decision Saturday against Arkansas State at George Ward Park.
Paula Alvarez and Isabel Fernandez each picked up singles wins in match tiebreakers for the Blazers (5-7), but the team match had already been decided in favor of the Red Wolves.
Arkansas State (7-2) took two of the three doubles matches to claim the opening point and then picked up three straight-set singles wins.
ASU's Mariana Rong was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Isabel Fernandez at No. 1 singles. Biljana Miloshevska topped UAB's Menanteau Moolman, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 position, and Ceara Howey defeated Sarah Witkowski, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 as the Red Wolves locked up the team victory.
It was the first appearance on the singles court this spring for Witkowski, who had played only a pair of doubles matches as she battled back from injury.
UAB's Caroline Faught picked up a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3 over Ioana Teu, for one of the Blazers' points. Alvarez defeated Tamara Slijepcevic, 7-5, 6-7, 11-9, at No. 2, while Daniell claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 win over Janie Nowland at No. 3.
UAB now has two weeks off before it returns to action March 25 at Troy. That match is scheduled for a 12 p.m. CT first serve.
