BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB Athletics dedicated the Don and Alicia Huey Softball Hitting Facility Tuesday afternoon prior to the Blazers' 2012 softball home opener against No. 2-ranked Alabama.
At nearly 4,000 square feet, the $311,000 state-of-the-art facility features two batting cages, two pitching lanes, a turf surface, and retractable interior netting. The facility was completed prior to the 2010 season and was part of a multi-phase construction of a new on-campus softball complex.
"We are so grateful for the generosity that Don and Alicia Huey have shown to the UAB Softball program," head softball coach Marla Townsend said. "This hitting facility is state-of-the art and benefits our student-athletes in so many ways.
"Our team takes pride in being involved in the community and this gift has set an excellent example to our student-athletes as to what it means to give back to your community."
The Hueys, Champion Club members, have been outstanding supporters of UAB Athletics since its inception in 1977. Their support has also been recognized all across campus, including the School of Business, Reynolds Library, and Comprehensive Cancer Center. Don Huey is a 1972 graduate of the UAB School of Business.
