BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's soccer team, coming off an outstanding 2011 season in which it captured the C-USA regular season title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, has announced a sixth signee for its 2012 signing class, according to head coach Mike Getman. Goalkeeper Joseph Kusminsky signed a National Letter of Intent and will don the Green and Gold next season.
"We got to know Joe through our winter camp," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "He impressed us greatly with his hard work and excellent athletic ability. I think he has all the tools to be a big-time college goalkeeper. I am confident he will challenge for the starting position right away."
Kuzminsky was a two-time first-team all-conference performer at D'Evelyn High School in Littleton, Colo. As a senior, Kuzminsky maintained a 0.87 goals against average on his way to first-team All-Jefferson County honors.
Kuzminsky currently plays his club soccer for the Colorado Rapids (Major League Soccer) Developmental Academy team.
In the classroom, the 6-foot-4 goalkeeper earned a spot on his school's honor roll.
Kuzminsky joins UAB's five other signees which include Fatai Alabi (Houston, Texas/Wallace State CC), Alan Harwell (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Technology HS), Patrick Huang (Huntsville, Ala./Louisville), Freddy Ruiz (Fort Payne, Ala./Fort Payne HS) and Ian Svantesson (Longwood, Fla./Lyman HS).
"This year's recruiting class fits our needs perfectly," Getman said. "Every one of these players has the physical ability to compete at the highest level. We did not need to bring in lots of bodies. We wanted to find players who could help us right away and compete for starting positions right away. I think every one of these young men will challenge from day one.
"This group is also an outstanding group of young men who bring strong character and strong academics to our University."
