TUCSON, Ariz. –The UAB softball team split a pair of games on the first day of the Hillenbrand Invitational, defeating Southern Utah, 2-0, before falling to host No. 16 Arizona, 7-0.
The Blazers (4-3) took the lead early in the first inning against Southern Utah. Catherine Crawford reached base on an error by the Thunderbirds second baseman. Crawford stole second when no one was looking.
Kayla Orr singled and Mandy Lowman walked to fill the bases. Kristen McGrath was hit by the first pitch and Crawford walked in to score the first run.
UAB tacked on an extra run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tiffany Smith singled up the middle. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hailey Glynn. Crawford’s single tipped off the Southern Utah pitcher’s glove. The second baseman fielded the ball and threw to first, but Crawford beat the throw.
Smith ran to third and then home. The first baseman tried to throw Smith out at home, but the catcher couldn’t hang on to the ball and the run scored.
Amber Torres (1-1) pitched a complete game, fanning a career-high 10 batters and scattering five hits.
In the second game of the day, UAB held Arizona scoreless through two innings of play. But the Wildcats broke the game open in the third inning on a grand slam off the bat of Kristen Arriola.
The Wildcats added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run homer by Jessica Spigner.
UAB had an opportunity to score in the first inning when both Crawford and Lowman reached base on walks and McGrath was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded Kate Armstrong hit a pop up to the Wildcat third baseman.
