BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss Sunday to Louisiana-Lafayette on the second day of its spring season at the Samford Tennis Complex.
Louisiana-Lafayette (1-2) swept the doubles matches to claim the opening point and then won all six singles contests, including one by default over the short-handed Blazers (0-2).
UAB's best chances for points came at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions, where Paula Alvarez and Rachel Daniell each forced third-set match tiebreakers only to come up just short.
Alvarez dropped a 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 decision to Briggitt Marcovich at No. 1, while Daniell fell by a 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 score to Milou Israel at No. 3.
The Ragin' Cajuns took the other three contested singles matches in straight sets -- Sop van den Aarssen over Isabel Fernandez, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2; Erin Wilbert over Menanteau Moolman, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 4; and Tara Vasovic over Richole Berger, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.
Alvarez and Fernandez provided UAB with its best result in doubles but lost their eight-game pro set in a tiebreaker to Israel and Marcovich.
The Blazers are back in action Saturday, Feb. 4 against Austin Peay in Birmingham. That match will also be played at the Samford Tennis Complex with first serve scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
