TUCSON, Ariz. - UAB junior Jason Shufflebotham carded a second consecutive round of six-over par 77 during the second day of the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf Regional on Friday. As a result, Shufflebotham will enter Saturday's final round in a tie for 68th overall with a two-day tally of 12-over par 154 (77-77).
"Jason has not struck the ball that well over the past two days," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "It's beautiful weather out here but this is a very tough course and if you don't hit the ball well on this course, you are going to struggle. He just has to regroup and go for a strong finish Saturday."
Starting on the back nine for Friday's second round, Shufflebotham had a better start compared to Thursday when he bogeyed two of his first three holes. For the second consecutive day, Shufflebotham recorded a birdie on the 516-yard par 5 10th hole. However, he would go on to record a double bogey on No. 12 and bogeys on holes 17 and 18 to finish his front nine with a three-over par 39.
His score remained that way until another bogey on the par three seventh hole, which was followed by a birdie on the par 5 eighth hole. But Shufflebotham's final hole of the day would haunt him again as he recorded a triple bogey on the 436-yard par 4 ninth hole to result in a six-over par 77.
Over the first 36 holes of the 54-hole event held at the Omnl Tucson National Golf Course, Shufflebotham is a stellar three-under on par five holes, but has carded three bogeys on par three holes.
Shufflebotham will tee off the final round at 9:30 a.m. PT (11:30 a.m. CT).
"I just have to go out there and have fun," Shufflebotham said. "Hopefully I can get some breaks. If I can hit the ball like I have been in practice, I'll be fine. If someone told me I was going to come out here and have back-to-back 77s I would've thought they were crazy. I have been playing good leading up to this. I don't feel any pressure and I was relaxed out there today. It's a little disappointing but I just have to go out and enjoy it now."
