BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis program has earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award for the second straight year based upon its high score on the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR).
The awards, announced on Tuesday, are based on multi-year APR scores and go to teams whose scores rank in the top 10 percent of their sports. A total of 909 teams across all sports were recognized this year based on APR scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.
Teams receiving the award this year had APR scores ranging from 977 to a perfect 1,000. A total of 525 women's teams and 384 men's or mixed teams earned the distinction.
The APR provides a real-time view of a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete during the school year.
The UAB women's tennis team also earned an NCAA Public Recognition award last year. The program continues to shine academically with nine players being named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll this spring and Jenny Cape being selected for the third year in a row to the C-USA All-Academic Team.
