Blazers Finish Third At Yellow Jacket Classic

ATLANTA, Ga. - Freshman Sam Love finished with a career-best seventh-place result to lead the UAB men's golf team to a third-place finish in the five-team Yellow Jacket Invitational. The 36-hole tournament, being played at the Golf Club of Georgia, Lakeside Course, has a small field which includes tournament host and fourth-ranked Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Troy and UNC Wilmington.
Love recorded his first career top-10 finish by carding a round of one-under par 71 during Sunday's final 18 holes. He finished the event with a four-over par 148 - also a career best mark for 36 holes.
Two other Blazers had top-15 results in the 31-man field. Junior Jason Shufflebotham entered the day in fifth, but struggled with a 42 over his last nine holes to finish tied for 11th with a two-day score of 150 (72-78). Redshirt freshman Thomas Sutton closed with a round of 77 to result in a 151 (74-77), which tied for 13th.
Redshirt sophomore Hunter Hawkins tied for 22nd overall with a 156 (70-76), while junior Tyler Hock rounded out the Blazers with a 28th-place result (163).
Host Georgia Tech (567) won the event by 19 strokes over UNC Wilmington (586). The Yellow Jackets finished the 36-hole tournament at 9-under par. Georgia State (607) was fourth, while Troy (627) rounded out the field.
Georgia Tech claimed the top three individual results. Paul Haley earned low medalist honors, shooting 68 in the final round to finish at 5-under par. Teammate Kyle Scott finished the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish second at 4-under, followed by Yellow Jacket J.T. Griffin at 3-under in third.
The event was the final tune up before the Conference USA Championships, which will take place on April 24-26 in Texarkana, Ark.
