BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After driving in nine runs and helping UAB to four wins in the past six days, UAB junior third baseman Patrick Palmeiro was selected on Monday as the Conference USA Hitter of the Week.
Palmeiro posted a .389 batting average (7-for-18) last week and slugged .667 with a pair of doubles and his second home run of the season. He drove in at least one run in all four contests, including multiple RBI in all three games of UAB's weekend sweep of Cleveland State.
In Saturday's doubleheader alone, the Colleyville, Texas, product doubled twice, homered and drove in six runs. His two-run homer in the series opener helped UAB regain momentum after Cleveland State had cut its lead to one run. He then drove in two more runs on Sunday to help the Blazers close out the weekend with their seventh straight win.
Through 11 games this season, Palmeiro leads UAB with two home runs, 14 RBI and a .596 slugging percentage. He also owns a .340 batting average.
As a team, UAB has won seven straight games for the first time since 2006 and swept back-to-back weekend series for the first time since 2005. The Blazers are back in action Wednesday, hosting Mississippi State at Young Memorial Field at 6:30 p.m. CT.
