UAB Drops Midweek Contest to 11th Ranked Alabama

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball dropped its third straight game as the Blazers (23-14) fell to 11th ranked Alabama by a score of 12-6 at Regions Field on Tuesday night.
Alabama got the scoring started in the top of the first as Justin Lebron hit a towering home run to left field for his team high 12th of the season to put the Crimson Tide in front, 1-0.
UAB would even the score at one when Max Price drove in Andrew Hunt on an RBI groundout. The swing was Price's ninth RBI in his last nine games played.
The Blazers would jump out in front in the bottom of the third as John Paul Head reached on an infield single and Landon Beaver would come around from second on a wild throw to put the Blazers up, 2-1 through three innings.
The Crimson Tide would re-tie the game in the top of the fourth. Jason Torres executed a safety squeeze to bring in Brady Neal. The next batter, Andrew Purdy hit his first home run of the season which would bring in Eric Hines as the 3-spot in the inning put Alabama up, 4-2.
The Green and Gold would get three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Max Price would drive in another run on an RBI single to cut the Alabama lead to 4-3. The Blazers would tie the game at four by way of a double play and would retake the lead on a Landon Beaver RBI single to give UAB a 5-4 advantage through four innings.
Both teams would plate a single run in the fifth inning. For Alabama, Justin Lebron brought home Brennan Holt on a sac fly. The Blazers' run came on a wild pitch that scored John Paul Head and UAB carried a 6-5 lead into the sixth inning.
The Crimson Tide would score three of the game's final seven runs in the top of the sixth. True freshman Caleb Barnett's lone hit of the night was a 3-RBI double which catapulted Alabama back into the lead.
Brady Neal's third hit of the night was a single through the right side to bring around Justin Lebron, which was another unearned run as Alabama led, 9-6 through seven innings.
Andrew Purdy put the game on ice in the top of the ninth inning as he ripped Alabama's second 3-RBI base hit of the night into the right field corner for a triple as the Crimson Tide capped their scoring at 12 for the night.
The Alabama bullpen consisting of Sam Mitchell, Matthew Heiberger, and Hagen Banks combined to shutout the Blazers across the final four innings of the game as the Tide took home a 12-6 win.
NOTES
- Landon Beaver led the team with his second 3-hit game in his last three games. Beaver now has three straight multi-hit games and has 11 multi-hit games this season. Beaver has also reached base safely in 20 straight games.
- Max Price's two-RBI game was his fifth game this season with multiple RBI.
- Wesley Helms picked up a walk which extended his on-base streak to 24 games.
- Six different UAB hitters scored a run on Tuesday.
- The Blazers drop to 22-2 when scoring 5+ runs this season.
UAB hits the road for the beginning of a 4-game road trip beginning on Friday as the Blazers head to Tampa for a 3-game series against South Florida. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
