Shufflebotham Leads UAB With Seventh-Place Finish At Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. - UAB men's golfer Jason Shufflebotham recorded a 54-hole career-best mark of four-under par 212 to lead the Blazers at the 2011 Duck Invitational. The junior from Presatyn, Wales closed play in seventh overall, which marked the second top-10 tournament result in his career.
Shufflebotham played three consecutive rounds at par or below, starting the event with a three-under par 69, followed by an even par 72 during Monday's opening 36 holes. He played Tuesday's final 18 holes at one-under par 71 to finish four strokes better than his previous tournament career-low score of 216 set last October at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
As a team, the Blazers closed play in last place in the 15-team field with a tally of 911 (306-302-303). Junior Tyler Hock tied for 63rd with a 230 (78-78-74) on the par 72, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club course. Redshirt sophomore Hunter Hawkins tied for 72nd overall carding a 233 (75-75-83), while redshirt freshman Thomas Sutton closed with a 236 (84-77-75) to place in 81st. Junior Blake Watts rounded out the UAB golfers in 88th with a 282.
The field at the Duck Invitational featured five teams ranked among the nation's top 40, including top-ranked Oklahoma State (848), which held off an early final-round surge from host No. 28 Oregon (856) to win the Invitational by eight strokes. No. 22 Washington (870), No. 39 Oregon State (878) and New Mexico State (879) rounded out the top five. Pepperdine, ranked 35th in the country, finished seventh after shooting an 883.
The Blazers will next be in action on April 4-5 when they compete at the Bancorp South Intercollegiate in Jackson, Miss.
