EUGENE, Ore. - UAB junior Jason Shufflebotham carded a career-best 36-hole score of three-under par 141 (69-72) and is in a tie for fourth overall after the opening day of the Duck Invitational, held at the Eugene Country Club. As a team, the Blazers will enter Tuesday's final 18 holes in 13th with a 608 (306-302).
Shufflebotham's opening round of three-under par 69 marked the second-lowest 18-hole score of his career, just one stroke back of his personal best round of 68, shot during the David Toms Intercollegiate last October (second round). The Presatyn, Wales native followed that with a second-round even par 72.
Shufflebotham, who has only one top-10 finish in his career, enters the last 18 holes five strokes behind clubhouse leader Alex Moore of Oregon State, who carded an eight-under par 136 on the par-72, 7,020-yard layout.
Sophomore Hunter Hawkins, who is playing in just his second tournament at UAB, is the only other Blazer among the top 50, finishing the day in a tie for 45th with a 150 (75-75). Junior Tyler Hock is in a tie for 71st with a 156, while redshirt freshman Thomas Sutton is tied for 84th at 161 (84-77). Junior Blake Watts rounds out the Blazers in 88th overall.
The 15-team field consists of five teams ranked among the top 40, including top-ranked Oklahoma State who leads the field by three strokes after carded a team score of nine-under par 570 (291-279). Tournament host Oregon, ranked 28th in the nation, is in second at 573, followed by No. 22 Washington (576), No. 39 Oregon State (581) and San Jose State (588). Pepperdine, ranked 35th in the country, is in seventh after shooting a 593.
The Blazers, playing in the event for the first time in program history, are 10 strokes back of ninth place through the first two rounds.
