ONEONTA, Ala. – A big final round in which the Blazers carded the lowest team score moved the UAB men's golf team up four spots as they placed third overall at the Graeme McDowell Invitational at Limestone Springs Golf Course.
The Blazers entered the final 18 holes in seventh place but shot up the leaderboard with three of their five players who counted towards the team score shooting under par. UAB shot 284-285-276 for the tournament to finish at +5, three shots behind North Alabama who won the tournament at +2.
Alvaro Huidobro led UAB for a second straight tournament with a 14th place overall. Huidobro improved one shot each round by going 71-70-69 = 210 (E).
Morgan Slaton was one shot behind him at +1 and finished 16th overall. Slaton was under par in rounds one and three and shot 69-74-68 = 211 (+1) for the tournament.
Alejandro Fierro was the third Blazer inside the top 20 as he tied for 17th overall at +2 (74-70-68 = 212). Erik Olin just missed the top 20 as he tied for 21st overall at +3 (70-72-71 = 213, +3), while freshman Patrick Delaney rounded out the team efforts in a tie for 42nd (75-73-73 = +11).
However, it was freshman Clipper Salmon who shined in his first collegiate tournament playing as an individual. Salmon opened with a two over 72 but then shot consecutive rounds of 68 (-2) to finish in a tie for 7th place overall at -2.
John Bruce (+8) and Jonathan Ericsson (+11) tied placed 33rd and 42nd as individuals as well.
The Blazers have a short turnaround as they are back in action in six days at the Bryan Bros Collegiate hosted by the University of South Carolina.
