BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Thomas Sutton, a redshirt freshman for the UAB men's golf team, has been selected as the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
Sutton has excelled both on and off the golf course for the Blazers. In five tournaments during the 2010-11 season, the Montgomery, Ala. native boasts a 75.00 per-round stroke average, which ranks third-best on the team. Furthermore, his opening round of five-under par 67 at the Wolf Pack Classic (Oct. 4) was not only his personal best, but also the best round by a Blazer since Adam West recorded a 67 in the final round of the 2008 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
Sutton leads all freshmen on the team with five tournaments played and will compete in his first tournament of the 2011 spring season this weekend at the John Hayt Intercollegiate.
Sutton is a marketing major and boasts a 3.07 GPA during his two years at UAB (including a redshirt year in 2009-10). He earned a spot on the 2009-10 Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll a year ago.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Saturday morning on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:30 a.m. on ABC 33/40.
Sutton and the Blazers travel to Ponte Vedra, Fla. this weekend to compete at the John Hayt, hosted by North Florida. The Blazers compete in the three-day, 54-hole tournament Sunday through Tuesday. Live scoring can be found by going to Golfstat.com.
