BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Head coach Brian Shoop and the UAB baseball program began Wednesday's early signing period by announcing that outfielder/right-handed pitcher Adam Lau has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Blazers.
Lau, who stands 6-foot-2, 205-pounds is currently a senior at Sparkman High School, where he competes on the baseball and football teams.
In his junior season for the Senators, Lau was named to the Huntsville Times Elite First Team for posting a .425 batting average, while clubbing six homers and 34 RBI. He also accumulated a .507 on-base percentage and stole 13 bases.
Lau also joined the Senators football team this fall and played the sport for the first time as a senior. He lined up at a variety of positions including quarterback, running back, wide receiver, linebacker, safety and punter.
"The thing that sticks out about Adam is simply his athletic ability," Shoop said. "He is a great athlete. The fact that he just started playing high school football this year and was one of Sparkman's top players testifies to his talents."
On the diamond, Lau earned a varsity letter on the baseball team his sophomore and junior seasons and was a major reason for the Senators reaching the playoffs both years.
Beyond his excellent athletic ability, Coach Shoop feels that Lau's arm strength makes him a strong candidate for the mound in a Blazer uniform.
"Adam attended one of our high school camps and we were immediately intrigued by him," Shoop said. "He is physically strong, fast and possesses a very quick arm that will allow his velocity to jump as he spends more time on the mound.
"He has been a two-way player in high school and that is certainly possible at the next level, but we are most excited about Adam on the mound. He has the makings of a power-breaking ball which will be a true swing and miss pitch at this level.
"He plays high school baseball for head coach Kellen Greer who has done an outstanding job in preparing Adam for college baseball so we are getting an athlete who is well trained. We believe Adam Lau is truly one of the `sleepers' in the state of Alabama in this year's recruiting class."
The future Blazer will join UAB for the 2012-13 academic year and will compete for Green and Gold during the 2013 baseball season. Lau, an honor roll student, plans to major in engineering.
"Adam will be a great addition to the UAB campus community as well," Shoop said. "He is an outstanding student who plans to major in engineering. Adam is also a special young man from a special family. He is exactly the type of young man we want in our program and are excited to add him to our baseball family."
