ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- The UAB bowling team won a pair of matches that went the distance Sunday to capture eighth place at Bethune-Cookman's Wildcat Invitational.
The Blazers won the ninth-place bracket but moved up one position in the final standings when Southern was dropped to the 12th and final spot because it did not participate in Sunday's final round.
UAB's Sunday victories came over South Carolina State and North Carolina A&T in best-of-seven Baker contests in which the five bowlers alternate frames with each one bowling two frames per game. The first team to win four games wins the team match.
The Blazers pulled out the decisive seventh game in their bracket's semifinals over South Carolina State by a narrow, 159-156 margin and then took down North Carolina A&T in the finals of the bracket thanks to a 136-113 game seven victory.
Teams were placed into three four-team brackets on Sunday based on the results from the first two days of the tournament. UAB was in 10th place entering the final day. Fairleigh Dickinson, which was the top team heading into Sunday, breezed through the championship bracket to claim the team title.
This weekend marked the second competition for UAB in its inaugural season of intercollegiate bowling. The Blazers travel to Nags Head, N.C., next weekend for the Beach Open hosted by Elizabeth City State.
