ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- The UAB bowling team went 2-4 Friday in Baker matches on the first day of Bethune-Cookman's Wildcat Invitational at Ormond Lanes.
The Blazers posted victories over North Carolina A&T and Salem to sit in 10th place in the 12-team field heading into Saturday's traditional matches.
In the Baker format, each team's five bowlers alternate frames with each one bowling two frames out of the 10 in a single game. The teams play four total games against each other, and the one with the higher total pinfall after all four are completed wins the match.
UAB posted its victory over North Carolina A&T by a score of 589-558 and its win over Salem by a tally of 549-450. The Blazers came up just one pin shy in a tight match with Alabama State, falling 627-626.
UAB's other losses on Friday came against Fairleigh Dickinson (856-627), Delaware State (809-610) and Morgan State (720-629).
After one day of play, Fairleigh Dickinson has a 5-1 record and leads the tournament with a pinfall of 4,810. Delaware State is a perfect 6-0 but sits in second place with a pinfall of 4,660, and Florida A&M sits in third place with a record of 4-2 and a pinfall of 4,251.
Each team in the tournament will play six traditional matches when play resumes on Saturday with all five competitors for each team bowling a full game and their scores added together to form a team score.
UAB's first traditional match comes Saturday morning against tournament host Bethune-Cookman. The Blazers' match against Tulane at 1:10 p.m. CT will be streamed online at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/lady-wildcat-bowling.
The top four teams after Saturday's action will be placed into a championship bracket with semifinals and finals to be played on Sunday.
