Blazers Complete Day One At USTA/ITA Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Paula Alvarez and Rachel Daniell each went 1-1 in main draw singles action Friday for the UAB women's tennis team on the first day of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional at Samford.
Alvarez won her first-round match, 6-1, 6-4, over Kate Lanier from Southern Miss before being eliminated in round two by Auburn's Jen Pfeifler, 6-1, 6-0.
Daniell dropped her opening-round match to LSU's Olivia Howlett by scores of 6-4, 6-4 before rebounding in the consolation bracket for a 6-0, 6-7, 10-8 win over Troy's Roxy Ramirez. Daniell will continue consolation play Saturday.
UAB's Isabel Fernandez, also competing in the main singles draw, lost to seventh-seeded Mariam Kurdadze from Tulane, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round before dropping a consolation match by scores of 6-1, 6-1 to Alabama's Emily Zabor.
Menanteau Moolman won a pair of matches to move into the semifinals of the B singles flight. She led 4-1 against Troy's Gabby Viega when Viega was forced to retire in the first round. Moolman then topped Jacksonville State's Kelly Tomlin, 6-3, 6-1.
The Blazers also had a pair of doubles teams competing. Caroline Faught and Fernandez fell to Howlett and Whitney Wolf of LSU, 8-2, while Menanteau Moolman and Daniell suffered an 8-1 loss to Alabama's Zabor and Antonia Foehse. Both doubles teams will compete in consolation matches Saturday.
The tournament continues Saturday at Samford's Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion.
