CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Paula Alvarez and Isabel Fernandez teamed up to win the consolation draw of the top doubles flight Sunday as the UAB women's tennis team concluded play the UTC Steve Baras Classic.
Alvarez and Fernandez posted an 8-3 victory over Jacksonville State's tandem of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima to win the consolation finals in the first tournament of the Blazers' fall season.
The pair was one of two UAB doubles teams in action Sunday. The other, the duo of Rachel Daniell and Menanteau Moolman, was playing in the main draw finals of the Platinum doubles flight. But the Blazers, which were seeded second and had posted victories on each of the two previous days, came up short in an 8-4 loss to Diana Bukajeva and Jennifer Miller of Stetson.
Moolman was the lone UAB player still alive in a singles draw on Sunday. The junior had won a pair of matches on Saturday to advance to the consolation finals of the Platinum singles flight but dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Kennesaw State's Tess Lagerkvist on Sunday.
UAB's Rachel Cohen, who was paired with Lipscomb's Sam Bowman in the Silver doubles flight, was also scheduled to compete in a consolation championship match on Sunday, but Cohen and Bowman had to withdraw because of injury.
The UAB women's tennis team will continue its fall schedule in two weeks when the Blazers head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, starting Oct. 14.
