TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Paula Alvarez and Rachel Cohen won their flight Saturday as the UAB women's tennis team continued to find success in doubles on the second and final day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.
Alvarez and Cohen dropped only four games over two matches Saturday and defeated Chattanooga's duo of Emily Hangstefer and Brianna Wishing 8-1 in the finals of Doubles Flight 5.
UAB's Rachel Daniell and Menanteau Moolman advanced to the finals of Doubles Flight 4 before falling 8-6 to the top-seeded team of Andrea Nedorostova and Tatiana Larina of Northwestern State.
The other UAB doubles team competing this weekend -- Isabel Fernandez and Caroline Faught -- posted two wins Saturday in the consolation draw of Flight 2, including an 8-2 win over Troy's fourth-seeded tandem of Karoline Grymel and Candela Munoz, to finish in third place.
UAB also performed well in singles on the final day of the tournament, winning four out of five matches in consolation singles brackets.
Fernandez (Flight 4) and Daniell (Flight 5) each posted wins in third-set match tiebreakers, while Alvarez (Flight 2) won by walkover and Cohen (Flight 10) swept Alabama-Huntsville's Brandi Dykes 6-0, 6-0. Menanteau Moolman (Flight 9) lost her consolation contest in a match tiebreaker.
UAB will continue its fall schedule next weekend when the Blazers compete in the ITA South Regionals in Birmingham. Play gets underway Friday.
