TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team has a pair of doubles squads alive in winners' brackets after day one at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Friday.
The duo of Rachel Daniell and Menanteau Moolman advanced in Doubles Flight 4 with an 8-6 win over Rebecca Kirven and Jessica Diamond of Samford, while Paula Alvarez and Rachel Cohen posted an 8-1, first-round victory over West Alabama's Emily Gerding and Courtney McDonald in Flight 5.
Both pairs will continue in main draw action on Saturday, while the team of Isabel Fernandez and Caroline Faught will be active in the consolation bracket of Doubles Flight 2 after a hard-fought, 9-8 loss to NC State's Joelle Kissell and Sophie Nelson.
While Daniell and Moolman got off to a good start in doubles, they also both found early singles success. Daniell defeated the No. 2 seed in Singles Flight 5 - Misha Testerman of Kentucky - 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the first round, while Moolman blanked Alabama-Huntsville's Amanda Sippel 6-0, 6-0 in Flight 9.
Both players went on to suffer second-round losses and will continue play with consolation matches on Saturday.
The other three Blazers competing this weekend in singles - Alvarez, Fernandez and Cohen - each dropped a pair of matches on Friday. Alvarez lost her second contest in Flight 2 in a match tiebreaker (6-1, 4-6, 10-8) to No. 2 seed Elisha Hande of NC State.
Play continues in all flights Saturday in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama.
