BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On the heels of five straight victories and back-to-back tournament titles, the UAB men's soccer team has vaulted into the nation's top-25 in several of the Division I men's soccer polls. The Blazers, who are in the national rankings for the 15th time in the last 17 seasons, are ranked as high as No. 24 in the nation (Soccer Times).
In addition to their ranking in Soccer Times, the Blazers also find themselves among the nation's elite in the most recent College Soccer News (No. 25) and NSCAA (No. 27) polls, each released this week.
At 5-1 overall this season, UAB is off to its best start since the 2005 campaign. The lone loss came in the season opener back on Sept. 3, when the Blazers dropped a hard-fought, 2-1 decision at then-No. 2 ranked and defending national champion Virginia.
Since then, the Blazers have responded by capturing the UAB `Soccer For A Cure' Classic and the Lipscomb Classic in back-to-back weekends.
The Blazers face a stiff test this weekend when they open conference play against ninth-ranked and undefeated SMU (7-0) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at West Campus Field. Alabama A&M and Jacksonville will play prior to UAB's game (5 p.m.).
Admission is free to all UAB students with a valid ID. Students and season ticket holders are encouraged to attend a pregame tailgate with free food and drinks beginning approximately 90 minutes prior to the start of the match.
